Congo Weather can easily be described as a two-faced beast, typified by reverse seasons in the north and south parts of the country as well as almost opposing conditions between its distinctive regions. The Democratic Republic of the Congo – or Zaire, as it was once known – straddles the equator with most parts of the country lying within an inner humid tropical weather zone, the rest of the country under the influence of considerably drier subequatorial pattern. However despite the many variations and differences between its patterns, Congo Weather in both sides of the equator retains a unified front in terms of high temperatures and humidity levels.

Although the two main geographical zones of Congo experience reversed seasons, they share same weather patterns, both having two short wet seasons and two short dry seasons. The central area enjoys an equatorial type of weather, with an average annual precipitation of 1,700 mm (67 inches), while some areas of Shaba are perhaps the only parts of the country that break the mould of Congo Weather patterns, experiencing instead an almost five-month long dry period occasionally marred by drought.

The rainy season arrives in the areas south of the equator between the months of October and May, while the zone north of the equator received most of its rainfall between April and November. Rainfall averages range between 1,000 millimeters to 2,200 millimeters, with the heart of the Congo River basin and the highlands west of Bukavu enjoying the lion’s share of the country’s rainfall. As a general rule, precipitation levels tend to decrease the further away we get from these areas.

Although the average national annual temperature level hovers around 25°C, the equatorial forest experiences not only the highest but also the least changeable temperature levels, with daytime highs ranging between 30°C and 35°C, and around 20°C at night. Congo Weather in the southern part of the uplands is characterised by warm and rather damp summers, and cool and dry winters, becoming moist and warm, with temperature fluctuation of little although significant importance in the area around the lakes of the eastern highlands. Although humidity increases with altitude, weather retains a somewhat cooler feel with mist covering some slopes, particularly those in the Ruwenzori Mountains on an almost permanent basis.
